HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 6

Requesting the West Virginia Division of Highways to name the bridge on Route 250, North, across the Buffalo Creek near Mannington, Marion County, West Virginia, the "PFC Norville Clinton Shock, Veterans Memorial Bridge."

Whereas, Norville C. Shock was born November 5, 1921, at Clarksburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia and was inducted into the United States Army from Mannington; and

Whereas, Private First Class Shock, while serving as a member of Company L, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, was seriously wounded during the Rhineland campaign in Germany on February 27, 1945, when he was shot four times in the spine and legs, resulting in paralysis from the waist down; and

Whereas, For his great valor and sacrifice, Private First Class Shock was awarded the two battle stars and the Purple Heart; and

Whereas, Private First Class Shock, who died too young, at age 40, on July 19, 1962, at the Veteran's Hospital in Clarksburg, West Virginia, from the residuals of the wounds sustained by him serving his country, left a widow, Pauline Virginia Shock, and children,
Renee Shock (now Efaw), Timothy Charles Shock and Sheila Shock (now Doshen); and
Whereas, Private First Class Shock, a husband, father, patriot and hero returned home a paraplegic war victim and built a specially constructed home through the efforts of the Veterans Administration; every day he lived in this home, with ramps for his wheelchair instead of steps, he held a flag raising ceremony; his war experiences and the life he lived, after returning home from the war and his hospitalization, is a tribute to his short life and well represents all Marion County and West Virginia veterans who have served their country and either paid the ultimate price for this service or who returned to their homes the victims of other war inflicted sacrifices; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Legislature hereby requests the West Virginia Division of Highways to name the bridge on Route 250, North, across the Buffalo Creek near Mannington, Marion County, West Virginia, the "PFC Norville Clinton Shock, Veterans Memorial Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House is hereby directed to forward a copy of this Resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways, to each of PFC Shock's surviving children, and to the Capitol Press Corp.
